Felling Band.wmv
Felling Band plays The Radetzky March as an encore at the end of a very enjoyable concert in Wardley Legion Club on Saturday 18th June 2011 on the occasion of the unfurling of the new Durham Miners' Association Follonsby Lodge Banner, which is a copy of the 1928 banner which was destroyed many years ago.
The banner is seen behind the band and represents one of 3 "Red" or communist type miners' lodges in County Durham, the others being Chopwell and Bewicke Main. All three lodges chose to include portraits of Lenis and Keir Hardie (Father of the British Labour Movement) on the front of their banners

On 29th May 1951 at Easington Colliery occured the last major mining disaster in Great Britain when 81 miners plus 2 men of the rescue brigade lost their lives. On the 60th Anniversary of that sad day we paid tribute to those men with a march behind the colliery band and the Miner's Lodge Banner from the site of the colliery via a service in the church to the mass grave in the graveyard. Was that Bill leaning on the car?
My çolliery started at easington straight from school in 1972
Love the Border terrier at 1.40 just before they play Gresford. Whenever any band begin to play this my throat becomes as if cramped, its such a moving piece. Son of a Welsh miner of the old school I suppose its inevitable. Dont see people of that calibre today.
That was me with my border terrier Billy. No longer with us I'm sorry to st.
:0
The band does a fine job. I only wish that the whistle blowers stayed at home.
when men were men!
Also worth listening to Jock Purdon's 'Easington Explosion' poem on my channel.
Let us all help to speed the day when this wonderful earth and its rich resources are held in common for the benefit of all humanity.Working men and Women of all lands unite.
The Sop is the soprano cornet. It is smaller and pitched higher that the cornet. The cornet is a B flat instrument where as the sop is an E flat instrument. It also has a smaller mouthpiece so is more difficult to play when marching
sop? what is that out of interest?
Greatest respect from lancashire. pity thatcher the bitch closed the mines.
Comrades remember the inscription on many miners banners.Workers of all lands unite.
We must never forget the price of coal, it is bone and blood comrades. Please listen to luke kelly singing the springhill mining disaster.

@DMMuseum We Have just been to the Mermorial today its a lovey place I only wished the weather had been better My Partner comes from a Mineing Family from Northumberland A very moveing mermorial thank you TS God Bless them All
@DMMuseum It gets a better later on on the video so its not all bad thanks regards TS
God Forbid! It's the Toccata from Suite Gothique, by Leon Boellman, arranged by Eric Ball. Fantastic music and entirely appropriate for a sombre event such as this. Only negative bit about it is the high wind does no favours to playing outside.
I dont know what that band is playing but its awfull
Is it me or does Saildburn contain quotes from the Internationale?
The band is Houghton-le-Spring Pipe Band who have led the Lumley 6th Pit banner through Durham every year since 2006
Yes it was a good day.....did not know we ended up with 3 banners behind us?.....lol...
Is that march called Kenilworth???
Sons of the Brave
whos willing to sell her to a railway enthusiast who will love her like shes part of the family
'Death and Glory' Nice march.
Look forward to seeing you all.
Tye band does a fine job. I know the melody of the march they are playing. Anyone know the title? A small point: The woman in the front should have dressed better and not carried a shopping bag. It appears as if she was a last minute choice. To her credit, however, she is in step with the music.
Lets not forget how difficult the route is up to the memorial park. We have to carry the banners sideways on ! Pay no heed to the critics, you know how much the band is appreciated when we all get back to the club. One of the best days in the calendar for the banner groups! All the best
Cheers, See you at the strike commemoration next Saturday
very well played, allways love a good brass band!!! i play in lanchester brass band n play in the durham minors gala aswell :) x
As one of the banner carriers, I think the band does a bloody good job, not only on the march but also back at the club. Music exactly for what it is, to be enjoyed!
Roll on July 11....Miners Gala 2009, looking forward to it already, hopefully Murton will turn out in force for a party :-)
I can quite imagine how hard it must be to keep in step in time with the music, near enough impossible without hours and hours of practice
Awesome band. It's great that Trimdon has a band. It's great when the come around at Christmas too!
The Miners "National Anthem"Superbly played. My Dad was Methodist Minister there in the 70's.Near south moor isn't it?Cheers.
Well Done George they are a credit to you!, keep it going
Canny advertisement for Elliotts taxi,s ..
My god ... ive heard that music ....it woke me up ten to 8 sat morning of the 'big meeting'day ... a think its a bit scarey !!!
Well Done Bowburn for having the American Band lead your banner in. They were EXCELLENT!!! I for one hope that they will not wait so long to make a repeat performance. ps. Does anyone know what their band was called and where exactly in America are they from?
I don't suppose you have any footage of the Monkwearmouth banner? I made it in the late 80's. It may be to old to be out now and Idea if it still exists? Thanks Jonathan
"band playing an unusual piece of music for marching to" Err, I don't think so! You must not have seen the film, "The Glenn Miller Story," then? It's the "St. Louis Blues March"
I don't think you are going to win many too friends there, as they are in fact a YORKSHIRE Band! ;-)
Not the easiest march & OK, it's not note perfect, but still tidy for a short-handed 4th Section band
Cracking stuff!
Thank you
I must say that this day was one that will stick in my mind for a longtime as a day that I thoroughly enjoyed myself... even at that ungodly our of a Saturday morning!
